Who I work with

Organisations where data, AI and technology have to be delivered safely, and where the outcome is better care or better research.

NHS Trusts, ICBs and government bodies

Making data and AI safe and useful at scale, within NHS, GDPR and ICO requirements.

Care providers and local authorities

Making technology and data work for social care and integrated care, from providers to councils.

Health tech and life sciences scale-ups

Product, engineering and data leadership for companies growing in regulated markets.

MedTech companies

Product, engineering and data leadership for medical technology and AI healthcare companies in regulated markets.

PE and VC-backed portfolio companies

AI strategy and product and engineering transformation for businesses in the portfolio.

Universities and research bodies

Trusted Research Environments and data governance, working with OMOP and FHIR.

How I can help

Three ways of working, so the support fits the need and the board's time.

Governance

Non-executive and chair roles

Board-level challenge and guidance on technology, AI, data and digital strategy, grounded in direct experience of running these functions in regulated settings.

Ongoing support

Retained board and executive advisory

A trusted sounding board for chairs, CEOs and executive teams on strategy, investment decisions and delivery, available when it matters.

Focused projects

Project work

Defined pieces of work on AI strategy, data platforms, and product and engineering transformation, with clear outcomes and a clear end.

Non-executive and board roles

Board-level challenge, from someone who has run the function.

I am available for non-executive director and chair roles in health, care, medtech, life sciences and local government, where technology, AI, data and finance are central to the board's decisions.

What I bring to a board

Technology, AI and data oversight

A former Non-Executive Director with a Technology, AI, Data and Finance remit, providing board-level oversight, challenge and strategic guidance.

Judgement in regulated settings

Delivery under NHS, GDPR and ICO constraints: GDPR compliance delivered on time and 40% under budget at Aetna, and ICO-grade anonymised patient data for 13 acute NHS Trusts at Sensyne Health.

Financial and commercial literacy

A qualified management accountant (CIMA), who founded and sold a healthcare IT company (5.4x multiple) and led global technology functions at JPMorganChase and Merrill Lynch.

From the executive team to the boardroom

Experience translating technical strategy for policymakers, boards and executives, with board-level accountability for technology at Nuffield Health.

Board and governance roles

Non-Executive Director
Northern Health Science Alliance · November 2015 – January 2020
Technology, AI, Data and Finance remit.
Board Advisor
Apian · March 2020 – present
A drone logistics start-up delivering point-to-point healthcare delivery, running live UK pilots across public and private clinical sectors.
Honorary Professor in Intelligent Systems
UCL · November 2010 – July 2022
Chaired the Doctoral Training Centre for the UCL Financial Centre.
Chief Information & Digital Officer
Nuffield Health · December 2015 – December 2016
Board-level accountability for technology.

What I think about

Agentic AI in regulated settings

Moving a whole 400-person division to Agentic AI delivered an 8–10x improvement in software delivery. The harder part is doing it safely.

Data as a national asset

Joined-up data can support Neighbourhood-level care, when it is built on trust, consent and good governance.

Trusted Research Environments

Secure, standards-based platforms (OMOP, FHIR) that let researchers use health data without putting people's privacy at risk.

Delivering under NHS, GDPR and ICO constraints

Regulation is part of the design brief. I have delivered GDPR compliance on time and 40% under budget.

Research and evidence

Where research meets the real world.

Sixteen years of working alongside universities, clinicians, regulators and research bodies to turn evidence into products and platforms that get used. Each project taught me something I now bring to boards.

Behavioural science and digital health

Using proven behavioural techniques, and AI coaching, to help people change what they do.

2010 · Healthsolve

IT Future of Medicine (ITFoM)

Joined as an SME member of this EU-funded project, led by the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics, delivering software and data modelling.

What I learned: Translation techniques make new capabilities understandable to consumers, and a clear workflow gets them used.
Learn more →
2015 · Bupa

Global Institute for Digital Health Excellence

Established GLIDHE with the behavioural science department at UCL.

What I learned: Proven techniques such as nudge work on wellness behaviour, especially around modifiable risk factors.
Learn more →
2016 · Bupa

Digital coaching for diabetes with IBM Watson

Worked with IBM Research to build a digital coach for diabetes management using Watson.

What I learned: You can scale a coach by teaching an AI how to act and respond.

Regulated medtech and certification

Taking products through MHRA rules and generating evidence that stands up.

2019 · Cloudsolve

Real-time blood pressure on a wrist-worn device

Worked with two clinicians on capture of blood pressure in real time from a wrist-worn device, helped with design and the consumer launch, and achieved MHRA CE 2a certification.

What I learned: Moving a blood pressure algorithm onto a smartwatch gives consumers immediate feedback.

2021 · Sensyne Health

A scalable Covid lateral flow test reader

During Covid, created a highly scalable app that reads lateral flow tests, reported as more accurate than a trained reader. Calibrated Covid signal strength against machine-learning identification with scientists at Porton Down. Patent pending.

What I learned: Speed of iteration, and the right partners, decide what you can do when a compelling event arrives.
2023 · The Access Group

Clinical studies for MHRA certification

Ran clinical trials to achieve MHRA certification for clinical decision support, ambient voice dictation and behavioural analysis.

What I learned: Working with academic and in-house clinicians to design practical studies is how you produce evidence under MHRA guidelines.

Data and AI at scale

Building the data foundations researchers and clinicians can trust.

2020 · Sensyne Health

Digital therapeutics and drug discovery

Worked closely with 35 doctoral researchers on digital therapeutics and drug discovery, as a safe and ethical collaboration between NHS Trusts and major pharmaceutical companies. Pipelines spanned lung cancer growth imaging, immunogenetics and Covid.

What I learned: Ethics and governance are what make collaboration between the NHS and industry possible.
2020 · Sensyne Health

Secure multi-petabyte data pipelines

Advised on data architectures for a secure pipeline of multi-petabyte healthcare data, reducing friction and time to analysis.

What I learned: Consulting with data scientists to streamline architecture into machine-learning-ready formats pays back quickly.
2025 · The Access Group

An EPR data ecosystem with the Office for Life Sciences

Worked with the Office for Life Sciences to build an ecosystem of electronic patient record data, representing 40 million patient records and over 4.5 billion records.

What I learned: Two-way interoperability lets every party benefit without rebuilding, and an MCP and API approach streamlines federated data methods.
2026 · The Access Group

Agentic AI in clinical research

Worked with clinical scientists at South London and Maudsley on agentic AI for clinical research, as part of a Biomedical Research Centre bid.

What I learned: Supporting an academic bid for research funding.

Real-world deployment

Taking research ideas into hospitals, and into the air above London.

2024 · Apian

AI in healthcare supply chains

As Board Advisor and shareholder, supported AI in supply chain logistics, working with the European Space Agency and the Civil Aviation Authority to become the UK's only drone operator over London. Now operating in seven NHS trusts.

What I learned: Regulators will work with you when the clinical case is clear.
Alan Payne is a Board Advisor to, and shareholder in, Apian.
Learn more →
2025 · Apian

Robots and a hospital digital twin

Robotics, including robot dogs, at three NHS hospitals including Great Ormond Street, and a hospital digital twin built from Lidar data.

What I learned: Spatial data can improve hospital logistics such as porterage, and lets you model scenarios that could not be tested before.
Alan Payne is a Board Advisor to, and shareholder in, Apian.
